A recent study by researchers at Wenzhou Medical University in China underscores the significant role of sleep patterns in promoting healthy ageing and longevity.

The study, published in Nature Aging, analysed data from over 10,000 adults aged 65 and older, revealing that individuals who maintained consistent sleep durations of seven to eight hours per night exhibited better physical and cognitive health compared to those with shorter or longer sleep durations. The findings suggest that adhering to regular sleep schedules may be a key factor in achieving successful ageing.

The researchers emphasise that both insufficient and excessive sleep can adversely affect health outcomes in older adults. They advocate for public health initiatives to promote optimal sleep habits among the elderly population, highlighting the importance of sleep hygiene in enhancing quality of life and extending health span.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence linking sleep quality and duration to overall health and longevity, reinforcing the need for individuals to prioritise consistent and adequate sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle.
